Abstract
The main aim of this work is to determine the relationship between the level of rural economic development and the level of public debt in the European Union. An additional aim of the study is to establish the level and determinants of public debt in the countries surveyed. The obtained data show that in some countries of the European Union rural economic development is negatively correlated with public debt, and in others the opposite is true. The negative relationship in all the EU countries was recorded between rural economic development and the cost of servicing the public debt.
